staking a spot

you know that you have managed to crack through the steel perimiter, elbow your way through crowds of masters and legends with elaborate seasonal homes, wade past hordes of statistics and memories to claim yourself a humble corner in the heart of a true sports fanatic when you can ask-- without first checking if he already knows the outcome-- 'hey, did you see Nadal win the French Open today?' and still live to tell the tale.

however, it's not for the faint of heart. i do not recommend it.

  5. Cadiz, that’s rule number one of sports etiquette. Never give away the outcome of an event that you’re not 100% sure the person you’re asking has already seen. That’s like asking if you saw so and so die on Lost. (I’ve left out names just in case some people are still paying catch up.) Or like giving away the ending of a really good twist on a movie… I hope you learned your lesson.

  6. it's true, that was a bad move on my part. it's just that i knew H was looking forward to the matchup and was going to get up early to see it, so i figured by 10 p.m. he definitely would have known. but still, i could have exercised more caution, because i have had movies ruined for me.

however, i must give the guy credit. all he said was for future reference, the best way to phrase that would have been, "Did you see who won the french open?" and didn't get angry.

but maybe that's because he HAD seen it.

    i consider myself schooled.

  8. I had one of the World Cup game outcomes ruined for me in a similar fashion. Though I had taped the game and was planning on watching it, it wasn't one of the games I was most interested in. Lucky for him.

  11. Ugh... That's like when stupid CBS gets an F1 race but don't air it until 6 hours after it happened and BBC news prints a headline about it on their news feed... I don't know whether to be more mad at CBS or BBC...
