real men wear teal

i justify watching so much television these days by doing something else at the same time. the hobby du jour is knitting and crochet, which i can look away from long enough to pay attention to the tube. this works out well because i happen to know several people expecting children in the coming months so i can work on homemade gifts. i like to use non-traditional baby colors, which are good for two of the people who don't yet know the sex of their children.

i made a baby hoodie in bright teal/aqua, convinced that it'd be good for either sex at the time i bought the yarn. however, now that i've finished it up with a tiny white border, i'm worried that it looks a little too girly. i don't want my work to end up in a drawer never to be used, so i put the question to you guys: would you let your little man wear that color or should i do the next one in a nice safe green?

  1. I'd have to see it to be sure. However, if it's enough to get you to be worried that it might be too girly, then my inclination is that it is in fact too girly, and that I would not put my son in it.

  2. I think teal's a good safe colour. Blue shades are pretty gender safe. But a picture wouldn't hurt. I intend to dress my future babies in all sorts of things I could personally never get away with, so I'm fine with anything.

  5. I can't say without seeing it.

I think that teal is pretty gender neutral, but there are always exceptions.

  6. my sister once bought some socks for her friend's son, and they were so cute, with little goldfish on them, but her friend returned them to the store because she *knew* they were from the girls' line - even though there was nothing inherently feminine about them.

  7. I think teal works well for both sexes, so I would have to say yes.

  8. becky, that kind of stuff is what scares the hell out of me about giving homemade presents. that people will have some weird preconcieved notion about it.

sometimes you think the recipient is going to appreciate them, and then they turn out not to. or else they think it's ugly and their reaction hurts your feelings. the absolute worst part is that homemade gifts often cost much MORE than storebought and that's not even counting the person's time and effort into making it. some people believe that it's a "cheap" gift. so if they're not going to appreciate, why bother?

on the other hand, i've given gifts to people of whom i expected nothing at all (a good friend's sister, etc.) and they've told me that they treasure it. that kind of stuff makes my damn day.

  9. its a BABY- they're allowed to wear whatever colors (as long as its not pink for a boy)

white trim or not, it'll be fine for a boy--- or a girl!

  12. A friend of the family gave my kid a winter jacket last year. It was a blue jacket. On the inside, it had a floral-type pattern on it. I freaked out that it was a girl's jacket and wouldn't let him wear it (of course, we already had another jacket, so we had options).

I'd like to say I'm above this stuff, but I'm not. My kid always had a good head of curly hair, and when they're that young, the only way to tell their gender is by their clothing and accessories. It's awkward when people aren't sure, or if they guess wrong.

In fairness though, I probably wouldn't have said it looked girly if the notion wasn't already in my head before I saw it.

  17. Before I finished reading, I was thinking it was for a boy. But I'd totally wear it, and I'm a girl. So I think you're pretty safe.
