me in grown-ups' clothing

It's been extremely difficult to concentrate lately. Don't get me wrong, there is plenty to do and even more to worry about (three-person operation may go to two-person in the not-so-distant future). And I'm near the beginning and definitely at the end of the line—there's no one to take any hand-offs. Oh, and in the meantime I'm supposed to be chasing down other employment accommodations for the future.

Today I've been making Very Important Decisions that my boss would have handled if she were still here. And I feel a little like a fraud telling people what to do. I mean, I get it, but I feel like a kid at the adult table—grabbing a turkey leg in my fist will get the job done, but it would destroy any credibility I have. Besides, I'm not certain which silverware to use and I'm too short to see what everyone else at the table is doing (which is my tactic in real-life dining situations). So instead I'm following Highcon's advice: Be authoritative in what you do and just figure it out as you go along. Right.

If I bury my head in a pile of yarn and mindless television, will the situation resolve itself by the time I come up for air?

  1. I'm sorry life's so rough. It's rough when you feel like you don't know what you're doing, but I have always found that if you talk LOUDER it makes you seem RIGHTER. Seriously! :)

And thanks for the duvet tip! I'm actually excited to go try to make the bed now(!?!?). What have you done to me?

  2. Oh dear, that's all you need--another job at your current job.

Hey, at least you own a unit in a condo and it didn't flood in the Great Midwestern Storm of the Century this past weekend. That's always a nice thing to be able to say, yes?

  3. i will definitely keep volume in mind, supacoo! good luck with the duvet, i know the instructions are a little vague.

teej, that was SOME STORM, wasn't it? i read somewhere it was the most rain in a specific time period since they started measuring rain! and i'm very thankful i didn't have any lingering fallout—i know some people who had quite a bit of damage. that reality check was much needed.

  4. They say you learn more from your mistakes than from your successes... but I'm guessing your the kind of person that HATES to make mistakes... Learning sometimes sucks, but you'll be better in the end for it.

--end motivational speech that when read back, doesn't seem all that motivational--

  5. I of course don't want to recommend merely turning away from problems instead of confronting them head on, but mindless television can sometimes be a lifesaver. Might i recommend the new season of Secret Diary of a Call Girl?

I wasnt even very fond of winnie the pooh, but a good point is a good point.

  7. I often look around and think to myself: I am in charge of stuff? Like decisions? Professional ones? How did THAT happen?

    Good luck, sistah.

  9. As long as you *sound* like you know what you're talking about, most people will assume that you do. Or, they'll laugh behind your back at your lack of knowledge, but you won't know that and you'll think you came out okay. Which really is what matters, because it *will* all be over eventually.
