this is not an endorsement

Last week, H, stumbled onto a movie that I had only heard of briefly. When I asked him how he liked it (curious as to why a film with so many big-name actors had hit the dollar theater so quickly), he didn't really say much about it. All he would say is that I should watch it and judge for myself. I couldn't get a read on whether the movie was really terrible and he wanted someone to commiserate with about its horribleness or if he thought I'd really enjoy it. H has an excellent poker face (and voice), so I really had no idea what he was thinking. Reluctantly, I moved it to the top of my Netflix queue.

I got it in the mail and watched, spending the entire film looking for what it was that may have irked H. I thought there were a few possibilities, but more than that I found myself getting hooked by the sincerity of the story and its magic. I finished it with a sense of warm happiness I haven't had since I discovered that french film without any hype years ago.

Later, when I called him to find out what all the secrecy was about, H said, "Well, I knew you wouldn't like it as much if I told you that I thought you'd really like it."

He knows me so well.

We have that same issue in our relationship, but I usually can't stop myself from gushing about something I love, thus overhyping it and inducing him to be skeptical. I need to get better at my poker face.

Amelie? That's quite a comparison. I'm going to Netflix this Stardust.

P.S. Are you warm? I worry about my Chicago friends because I don't know how they can be warm. Be warm, OK?

to be fair, it was the warm feeling that reminded me of Amelie. the movie itself is more along the lines of Willow or Princess Bride. now forget i said that.

i'm pretty warm, considering; it's all about the layers. thanks for thinking of me! I hope you guys out there are warm, too.

How sneaky! When I first was reading your post and clicked on the imdb link, I thought, "Why wouldn't he like that movie!" Then I got to the end of your post... How funny!

I rented the movie on Netflix in anticipation of watching it without my hubby because I thought it looked to chick-flicky to be his type. He ended up watching it with me and actually liked it! :)

I absolutely love both of those films! :D

Princess Bride, huh? I may have to see it. Anything that draws comparisons to an Andre-the-Giant feature must be high caliber.

Yeah, it's the Princess Bride reference that got me, too. I'll have to put it on hold.

That is kinda like Nadia. Except I'm not as smart as H and I get too enthusiastic anyway and then she rediscovers the thing I knew she'd like months later and I'm all "I *told* you about that months ago!"
