yeah, yeah, but what's in your portfolio?

the other day at the office, someone came in wearing red hotpants with black stockings, knee-high furry black boots and a clingy, semi-transparent, shiny gold leopard-print top.

i'm ashamed to admit it, but yes, i judged this woman. why? because she sits in the "design" section of the office. don't get me wrong; she seems like a nice enough person. and i accept that it was probably wrong of me to do so. but it's just that it reminded me of so many people out there who wear their artsiness on their sleeves, shoes, or hair, then walk around like everyone else ought to lay sheafs of fluffy watercolor paper in the path of such creative genius and as if every thing that comes out of their mouths is so very profound, all because of their look.

please get over yourselves, artsy-fartsies.

i am completely down with people expressing themselves outwardly through appearance, but the bottom line is this: dress however you want but let your work speak for itself. oh and leave your hoitytoity attitude at home in the crayon box.

I agree with you. They tend to come across a bit superficial and insecure. If they have to draw attention to themselves all the time, perhaps they really aren't talented!

I so agree. Then they put you down if you try any sort of artsiness just cause you're wearing jeans. Tsk tsk.

Erm, I don't care how creative this person is, there's no reason to go to work dressed like a hooker!

hahah as someone who went to an artsy farty school i couldnt agree more. maybe what they lack in creativity they make up for in in bright clothing. (typing this as i notice the bright green shirt i wore to work today)

is she at least skinny?

Yeah, but the old guys in jeans and a ponytail are worse.

that's exactly what i mean, guys. yeah, just because i'm not using my needle/thread skills to make thigh-high legwarmers out of a tablecloth doesn't mean i have no imagination! those are the people who helped me decide to opt out of art school. that and the fact that i got a B on an art history paper that i worked hard at and was passionate about [and kicked ass, btw], because the prof didn't agree with my interpretation. HMPH! i like dealing with facts and sources who will back up what they say.

yes, she is skinny. a little too skinny, if you ask me. does that have anything to do with it?

really? jeans and p.tail that bad? guys i know like that seem pretty down to earth. and i think the tweed jackets with elbow patches are kind of cute.

If I wore an outfit like you described it'd be because I lost a bet or something. Maybe that's her story?

Nah, probably not.

I don't know, I'll give her the benefit of the doubt. Maybe it was laundry day and that's all she had left?

I've thought about them too, the ones who try to tell the whole world, look at me, I'm so creative etc.

And the truly creative ones, they put all their creativity into their WORK.
