and i said hey!

every afternoon at 1:30 pm, as i sit with my lunch in front of the tv, i think to myself, 'Arthur' may just be the best show on television.

what other shows successfully put several semi-ambiguous animal species together on equal footing, teach life lessons through playground shenanigans, and throw in just enough subtle adult humor that you find yourself watching at rapt attention and singing that little ditty on the way into the office? it brings me right back to third grade.

i have learned that:

curse words have magical powers
delinquents are called 'tough customers'
ice cream shop mood music makes you dumber
the moose can't speak without his hand up some giraffe's ass
it's not cool to be a 'gleeper'

but i haven't been able to figure out what kind of animal binky is.

Arthur is on opposite 'the people's court,' and although marilyn milian is damn entertaining, i'm with the aardvark.

and besides, d.w. is a badass.

i LOVE the Big Red Dog - clifford that is! cus the family moved to this awesome new england island since he got SO BIG-- if you remmember from "Clifford, the puppy days" they used to live in Manhattan. So you can guess why i love the show! I want to be like clifford and move to a nice island in new england!!!

for some reason i can't stand arthur and them-- he just seems like a little old man in kid form--- d.w. is a going to grow up to be a lesbian--

yeah, he has a puppet.

clifford is all right; but i couldn't get past the fact that it was jack tripper that was his voice.

they're never going to let them grow up. and i think the 'old manness' is arthur's appeal. you never knew anyone like that in real life?

yeah, my younger boy cosin-- we called used to call him, little old jewish man- haha-- now he grew up and started acting younger...

exactly. it's almost cute when they're so serious like that. but refreshing when they finally relax.

i liked clifford IN BOOK FORM ONLY.
I thought the cartoon was waaaaaaaaay too hokey.

love arthur. loved the books and love the cartoons. i still watch it and i'm what... 27?
i also loved the bernstein bears. favorite stories, may have been "messy room" and "eating healthy"

newer favorite is the siamese cats on channel 11 at 2:30? 3:30? There's a ton of usage of chinese words worked into either the names, or story line... and plays out various elements of the chinese culture... sort of the modern day chinese fables... SAGWA is the name, which in chinese actually means "dummy" ... but anyway ... the whole intro song is in chinese and for someone who doesn't like to hang with asians... this asian likes.

btw im baaaaaaaaaaack

btw buster has his own "traveling with buster" show ... and his own website for it... where in "real life" he visits a variety of exotic spots...

pretty cute.

A puppet. That makes sense now.

OH MY GOD; berenstain bears and the big road race is one of my ALL-TIME favorite books. okay, what does it have? cool driving, cool cars, a race AND the whole thing is in rhyme! seriously, i can't recommend that one enough.

kaiya, i'm 26 and i have no bones about watching all that stuff. so much less commitment than trying to figure out what's going on in 'one life to live.' i'm very glad to see you're back. i was wondering what had happened to you.

I feel like I’ve somehow failed in life for not being able to participate in this conversation, but there you have it, I don’t know much of anything about Arthur. So instead I’ll mention perhaps my favorite pbs show as a kid. I don’t think it was around all that long, but it was what I looked forward to more than anything… more than Degrassi Jr High… that’s a lot by the way. It was a Canadian production called “Today’s Special.” Am I alone in my viewing of this?

Btw, I just can’t take soaps seriously… I’ve tried… I love referring to them as “my stories” as in, “Pipe down you kids! Jon’s trying to watch his stories!” but it never really took…

as a lifelong pbs addict, i loved degrassi. don't know too much about 'today's special' (cable?). but did you know there's a reprise of degrassi on Noggin and the kid with the hat, joey jeremiah is on it as the principal or something? too bad my friends with cable never let me watch it without ridicule.

i used to watch all the abc soaps back in the day with my mother, and know a few die hard fans. you pretty much have to see one every 6 months and have someone explain it to you to catch up, but i haven't heard of anything intriguing enough. (though i did hear that they changed felicias on gh becaus kristina wagner wants to go back to get her degree and the first time around she quit school for the show and this time they wouldn't sign her permanently. right when they're bringing back a good story)

i got jealous even listening to you talk about arthur. that's how bad i wish i had cable. damnit.

cadiz12 said...

don't worry, jazz, you can watch arthur if you have pbs. i wish i had cable, too.

Today’s Special was on PBS, I didn’t have cable when I was a kid. It was a show about mannequins that came to life at a department store after the place closed. It had a very magical feel to it that really appealed to me as a kid. I felt like I was a part of something that no one else was and that made me feel special. I’m a dork like that.

I heard a lot about the Degrassi reprise and I have a few friends that are hooked, but I never really got a chance to get into it. But I do know that the band Skankin’ Pickle has a song called “I’m in love with a girl named Spike” that I think is fantastic…

Yeah… still not into the soaps…

cadiz12 said...

is 'skankin' pickle' supposed to be in reference to a gigolo?

Jon said...

Not that I know of. Skakin’ is the most common dance form at a ska concert. And the pickle, well, it’s a giant pickle. Who knows, maybe, I’ve never been good with references like that. I just thought it was a giant dancing pickle.

cadiz12 said...

i didn't know about the dance. i always thought skankin' was something hoochie mamas do. is it fun?

dude, today's arthur was about building a treehouse and they had Frank Gehry on as a guest star.
i know it's unnatural, but oh how i love that show. and besides, any reference to Antonio Gaudi makes it even better.

Jon said...

I wouldn’t know, I don’t dance. Basically, it’s about as close to a mosh pit as you can get without actually shoving anyone else. It’s kind of like punk-ska itself… not too hardcore, just a lot of upbeat fun. I’m going to an Aquabats concert my first night in NY. I should be going on about 36 straight hours without sleep at that point, so it should be fun : )

well, you don't drink, and it's been proven that sleep-deprivation has the same effect as intoxication, so maybe you'll get a buzz after all.
